It’s no secret that adolescence is a tumultuous time of growth and change that can be difficult for both young people and their families. It’s also a formative phase in terms of cognitive development.According to the World Health Organization, the teenage years are a “crucial period for developing and maintaining social and emotional habits important for mental well-being.” Given that half of all mental health conditions start by age 14 but most go undetected and untreated, and suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-olds, the need for accessible mental health resources for this age group has never been more urgent. In response, we created a version of the Happify platform to address the unique challenges facing today’s teens.
Happify for Teens is among the first digital mental health solutions designed with this population in mind. All content has been adapted to be age-appropriate for 13- to 17-year-olds, and our QA process included a teen review to make sure the language and activities were relevant. We also made modifications to comply with privacy and safety regulations for this demographic.
The platform includes engaging programs and games to help teens reduce stress and anxiety, build self-compassion, boost confidence, and develop healthy habits around food and exercise. Happify for Teens also features guided meditations by Gala Narezo, a New York City-based meditation teacher who has taught mindfulness to students of all ages.
